This Land Is Your Land | Easy Guitar Song

America’s Most Famous Easy Guitar Song

"This Land Is Your Land" was written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie in 1940, and is likely one of the United States’ most famous folk songs.

It’s easy guitar song that will not only add to your repertoire but give you a fun way to practice the main chords in the key of G.

For this version will be using only three chords…

You’ll notice that I’ve used a Cadd9 chord in place of the usual folk guitar version of the open C chord. The main reason is that it’s easier to switch between the four finger G chord and this version of the C chord (Cadd9).

I think it sounds cool also.

These are three chords can use to play many songs in the Key of G. Went to get comfortable using them you can learn many songs very quickly.

Let’s Talk About Strumming…

For the video I’m using a strumI call the Country Folk Strum. I recommend that you start learning the song by just strumming straight down and keeping it simple.

This way it’s easier to learn where the chords and the lyrics come together.

However once you feel comfortable I’d encourage you to stretch a bit and add a fancier strum.

Here’s a diagram that may help you if you would like to use the strum.

Here’s a tip…

When you see I’ve indicated to hit the bass note it doesn’t mean you have to hit only one string. The idea is to alternate picking in the area of the low strings In the area of the higher streams.

This creates dynamics and that feeling of movement that I get with this strum.

  1. This is a solid tutorial. As a guitar player for more than 12 years I still use these basic chords when I’m starting to write a new tune. I then branch out from there, but this tutorial is essential for any beginners.
